If you’ve ever noticed a lump or swelling behind your knee, especially after activity, you might have what’s called a Baker’s cyst (also known as a popliteal cyst). While it can sound alarming, a Baker’s cyst is usually a sign of an underlying knee condition—and the good news is, physiotherapy can help manage it effectively.

What is a Baker’s Cyst?

A Baker’s cyst is a fluid-filled swelling that develops at the back of the knee. It occurs when excess

joint fluid (synovial fluid) is pushed into a small sac of tissue, creating a bulge. This often happens as a result of knee irritation or injury.

Common Causes

A Baker’s cyst usually forms due to another issue inside the knee, such as:

  • Knee arthritis (osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis)

  • Meniscus tears

  • Ligament injuries

  • Inflammation from overuse or repetitive strain

Symptoms to Watch For

Not everyone with a Baker’s cyst will have symptoms, but you might notice:

  • A soft lump or swelling behind the knee

  • Stiffness or tightness, especially when bending the knee

  • Discomfort or pain with activity

  • Limited range of motion

In some cases, the cyst may rupture, causing sudden pain and swelling in the calf—this should be assessed promptly.

When to See a Physiotherapist

If you have ongoing swelling, stiffness, or pain in the knee, a physiotherapist can assess the underlying cause of your Baker’s cyst and create a treatment plan. Early assessment can help prevent worsening symptoms and improve mobility.

How Betterform Physiotherapy Can Help

At Betterform Physiotherapy, we take a calm–build–integrate approach:

  1. Calm – Reduce swelling, inflammation, and discomfort using manual therapy, gentle exercises, and activity modification.

  2. Build – Strengthen the muscles supporting the knee, improve joint stability, and address contributing factors like gait mechanics.

  3. Integrate – Return you to your daily activities and sports without pain, ensuring long-term knee health.

Our goal is not just to treat the cyst itself but to address the root cause, so you can move with confidence again.

Take the Next Step. Don’t let knee swelling slow you down. Book your appointment with Betterform Physiotherapy today and get back to doing what you love—pain free.
